Work Based Learning (WBL)

Work-Based Learning (WBL) gives Bradley County students the chance to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in the real world. This program connects juniors and seniors with local businesses, industries, and organizations, allowing them to gain hands-on experience, build professional skills, and explore careers that match their interests and goals.

Through WBL, students can earn high school credit while developing important employability skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Many placements also allow students to earn industry certifications, build a professional network, and discover potential career paths before graduation.

Whether students plan to enter the workforce right after high school or continue their education, Work-Based Learning helps them take the next step with confidence. It’s all about preparing students for success—by giving them real-world experience, professional connections, and a clearer sense of direction for their future.

Building and Moving

In Tennessee’s updated CTE framework, “Building & Moving” is a meta-cluster that brings together three core career areas: Construction, Advanced Manufacturing, and Supply Chain & Transportation. At Bradley County Schools, these pathways offer students meaningful opportunities to build, create, move, and maintain the infrastructure, products, and systems that power our communities.

What does Building & Moving look like in Bradley County?

  • In Construction, students may explore residential and commercial building, structural systems, and mechanical/electrical/plumbing trades.

  • Through Advanced Manufacturing, learners engage in hands-on fields such as welding, machining, robotics, maintenance, and industrial technology.

  • In Supply Chain & Transportation, students gain insight into logistics, repair and maintenance, and the movement of goods.

Why choose Building & Moving?

  • It connects academic learning with practical, skilled work that’s in demand locally and regionally.

  • Students can earn industry certifications and credentials while in high school.

  • Pathways lead to both immediate employment and further education (technical training, community college, or university).

  • The work is essential — we rely on skilled people to build safe homes, maintain machines, transport goods, and keep systems operating.

What students and parents should know

  • Courses are sequenced, beginning with foundational classes and advancing toward capstone projects or practicum experiences.

  • Students will develop both technical skills and soft skills (teamwork, communication, problem solving).

  • Real-world exposure, internships, and work-based learning may be integrated, allowing students to try out careers before stepping fully into them.

  • Graduates from these pathways are well positioned for careers like electrician, machinist, welder, logistics coordinator, heavy equipment technician, or construction supervisor — or for further study in engineering and technical fields.

Bradley County’s Building & Moving cluster is more than just courses — it’s a commitment to preparing young people to contribute, create, and lead in the built world around us. If you’re a student who likes working with your hands, solving mechanical problems, or seeing a tangible result from your efforts, this pathway might be your ideal fit.
